"What if every Negro taxi dispatcher in the whole USA sent out all the taxis takin' our colored kids to the white schools. They couldn't stop us. If we all did it. They couldn't stop us." Gardner Bishop -- Scene 5
Now Let Me Fly was commissioned for the national celebration of the 50th anniversary of Brown v. Board through a generous contribution from Washburn University and was first produced by the Brown Foundation.
"... I attended the powerful production of 'Now Let My Fly' at the Topeka Performing Arts Center...Ordinary people - just like you and me - changed the way an entire class of people would be treated...Those few who took the risk and fought for what they believed in made a huge difference - not just for their children, but for black children everywhere." Media Tips
Look at websites for your local newspaper, television stations and radio stations to gather the contact information for feature, community calendar, and arts editors and writers. You may also search through your local newspaper to decide which writer or editor would most likely be interested in covering your reading (because they cover similar topics). Don't forget to contact your local ethnic press and media outlets as well.
Email, snail mail or faxing are great avenues to send information about your local reading to your local media.
Use the news release template (.37 MB PDF) to send information about your reading to these local media contacts.
Send media releases twice for daily media: One to two weeks before your reading and the other the week of your reading. You want to make sure your information is not lost and is on the local media's radar.
If your local newspaper is bi-weekly, be sure to send your releases one to two weeks before their printing date (you may want to call to ask about the best date and contact).
After sending the releases, call to follow up. See if the contacts received the information, if they need any other details or have any questions about your event.
